“Recent discoveries in neuroscience have proven that over 50 percent of the heart is comprised of neural cells. The heart is, in fact, a brain in its own right. Heart-centered perception can be exceptionally accurate and detailed in its information gathering capacities as indigenous and ancient peoples assert.” ~ Stephen Buhner, The Secret Teachings of Plants
Can we agree that the brain must serve the heart, and not the other way around? Then would it not behoove us, children and the world, to follow the lead of little ones? For, they are still saturated in the wisdom of the heart, in the imagination, creativity, silliness, wonder, intuition, kindness, gentleness, compassion and love not found in the calculating, analytical mind, but in our mysterious beating center.
Why would we want to take a child away from this? Why would we want to deprive our world of this beauty? Every time we disregard a child’s heart-intelligence we take from them, leaving them hollowed, available for the rationality we’ve become enslaved by. We discount a primacy of being that must be met and made real if we are to evolve much further.
As the world shakes and crumbles, it is the steadying force of childlike heart-felt wisdom that is needed, much more than anything the intellect can strategize. It is the loving touch of the angles found in children’s imaginings that will birth a new existence.
The dreams of tomorrow are not found in the linear mind, but far away, down sinuous roads only the heart travels.
Let children be, therefore, for their own sake, and for the sake of the heart-felt world we crave for ourselves, our children, their children, and Mother Nature. Let children dream us into new beginnings, into worlds our linear minds and curriculum cannot prepare us for. Let them sweep us away into the secret places we used to hide in as children, in the closet, by the brook, in the sweetness of that magical grove, where whispers of the heart are felt, and dreams are made real in the body.
Let this feeling body come alive again through the susurruses of the heart, so the body of humanity can resurrect itself from the doldrums of monochrome intellect into the colorful existence only the heart of a child knows of.
“May you experience each day as a sacred gift woven around the heart of wonder.” ~ John O’Donohue
